Why headline commission rates mislead most traders
A zero-commission trading service does not mean zero cost. Commission-free models typically recover margin through spread markups — the difference between the buy and sell price you see in the order ticket. For liquid instruments this spread may be a few basis points; for less liquid ones it can be substantial. Before drawing conclusions from a fee schedule, always identify the markup model and request the typical spread for the instruments you intend to trade.
The four fee categories that catch traders by surprise
Inactivity fees apply when an account has no trading activity over a defined period — often 30 or 90 days. Currency conversion charges apply when you fund an account in one currency and trade instruments denominated in another, which is common for Canadian traders using CAD accounts on international instruments. Withdrawal fees vary by method and can include both flat fees and percentage-based charges for amounts above a threshold. Finally, margin interest — the cost of holding a leveraged position overnight — accumulates silently and can exceed the headline commission cost over a multi-day hold.
How to model your actual cost at your trading volume
Start with the published spread or commission figure for your most-traded instrument. Apply it to your average position size and frequency over a representative month. Add the applicable withdrawal fee for your typical withdrawal frequency. Check whether your expected inactivity pattern triggers the inactivity fee threshold. The resulting figure is a realistic cost estimate, not a best-case scenario. The Kestrel Fundast applies this exact modelling approach to the operator's published schedule.
Asking the right questions directly to the operator
Published fee schedules often describe the rate structure without making the effective rate easy to calculate. Write to the operator before registering and ask specifically: what is the typical spread on the instruments I plan to trade, what is the inactivity fee threshold and amount, and what is the complete fee list for withdrawals by my preferred method? Request the answer in writing. Any operator that declines to answer these questions in writing is giving you important information about how they handle transparency in general.
